THE TEN COMMANDMENTS IN CONOY

One of the very few examples of the Conoy language that has survived:


Manee okuttarvokanz metèz okutarvokanz

God's ten commandments/precepts ten

1. Niez kummanee nequuttrane mattah kuppiezi piattomòk.

     I your God am one.  Do not pray to gods.

2. Mattàh kowizkaw azamô Manee.

     Do not (dis)honor god.

3. Chichezàn kunnawtokiz Santo, Manee osabbatho.

     Remember to keep it holy, God's sabbath.

4. Köz kooch kikkáwiz kie kuzza.

    Honor your father and your mother.

5. Mattiz kunnuptrawn.

     Do not kill.

6. Mattiz konińgzon.

     Do not commit adultery.

7. Mattiz kommûtt.

     Do not steal.

8. Mattiz kitchaw.

     Do not lie.

9. Mattiz azanáupà wyu kunnätöm.

     Do not covet a man's wife.

10. Mattiz kunnätöm kiematt uttaioumz.

       Do not covet your brother's things.
