Cherokee Nation Art Book Receives Accolades

Cherokee Nation Art Book Receives Accolades

June 03, 2011

TAHLEQUAH, Okla.— “Building One Fire: Art + Worldview in Cherokee Life,” a book that highlights contemporary and traditional Cherokee art and lifeways has recently received both state and national awards. Produced by Cherokee Nation with a narrative contributed from Principal Chief Chad Smith, Cherokee scholar Rennard Strickland and Cherokee traditionalist and educator Bennie Smith, the book showcases Cherokee culture as expressed through art.

In April the book was the recipient of the 2011 Oklahoma Book Award for design and illustration. This month the book was also named one of Independent Publisher’s top ten “2011 Outstanding Books of the Year,” receiving a gold medal in the Storyteller of the Year category. It was selected from among more than 4,000 entries to the Independent Publisher Book Awards. Outstanding Books of the Year were chosen by the Independent Publisher Book Awards judges for being the most heartfelt, unique, outspoken and experimental out of all entries in all categories.

The 224-page hard-bound book features photographs of more than 200 works of Cherokee art. Titles and highlighted phrases are presented bilingually using the Cherokee syllabary, a written form of Cherokee language. A narrative from the three authors helps set the context for what readers are seeing in the photos. Art represented in the book encompasses many forms, including basketry, paintings, woven textiles, carvings and pottery.

“Building One Fire: Art + Worldview in Cherokee Life,” is available through Cherokee Nation gift shops and many retail booksellers.
