CN to be member of NCAI

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Tribal Council unanimously approved a resolution at is Oct. 11 meeting authorizing the Cherokee Nation to become National Congress of American Indians member.

“NCAI is a Native American indigenous rights organization that focuses on Indian issues such as housing, health care and other important issues,” Council Speaker Meredith Frailey said.

Members of the NCAI cast votes on those issues according to the size of the tribe, and since the CN has 299,668 citizens it qualifies for 180 votes, Frailey said.

The NCAI membership fee is $25,000 and will be paid by an equal amount from the executive and the legislative branches out of existing appropriations.

The CN delegate is Principal Chief Chad Smith, while the alternates are Deputy Chief Joe Grayson Jr.; Tribal Councilors Bill John Baker, Tina Glory Jordan, Joe Crittenden, Jodie Fishinghawk, David Thornton, Janelle Fullbright, Don Garvin, Harley Buzzard, Curtis Snell, Chris Soap, Meredith Frailey, Cara Cowan Watts, Buel Anglen, Bradley Cobb, Chuck Hoskin Jr., Julia Coates, Jack Baker; Senior Legislative Officer Paula Ragsdale; Secretary of State Melanie Knight; and Group Leader of Health Services and Government Relations Melissa Gower.

I alwys thought that membership in NCAI was *individual* not *tribal*.
