TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Cherokee Heritage Center on Sept. 24 received a National Merit Award for its Cultural Outreach Program, which shares Cherokee history and culture with the public.

The CHC received the award from the American Association of State and Local History at the association’s annual conference in Oklahoma City. CHC Outreach Coordinator Gina Burnett and CHC Executive Director Carey Tilley accepted the award for the CHC.

CHC officials said the program reached more than 15,000 people, mostly school children, in 2009.

“Gina is the driving force behind this program and has gone over and above to make the program a success,” Tilley said. “Although the 2010 numbers are smaller due to fewer large audience storytelling programs, she continues to go out just as often teaching students about Cherokee history and culture through hands-on activities.”

Tilley said the CHC receives funding from the Oklahoma Arts Council to carry out the program.

“We are very grateful for this support as well as for the hard work Gina, former staff member Robert Lewis, and all of the staff and guest demonstrators have put in to place us in the national spotlight in such a positive way,” Tilley said.

The center strives to educate visitors about the history, traditions and culture of Cherokee people. It offers a permanent Trail of Tears exhibition as well as an Ancient Village, Adams Corner Rural Village, Cherokee Family Research Center and museum with Cherokee art and history exhibits and store.

It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
