Machtapassican

Was this supposed to be a medicine to cure people...where did this originate?  I read that it originated with the Nanticokes.  Thanks.

Mat-apas-i'-kan means "evil poison". It is of Nanticoke origin and has many different discriptions.

Re: Machtapassican

Pii'sun is good medicine. Matapasii'kan is a bad poison of vague discription that is proported to wipe out whole communities and used by witchs or sorcerers aomng the Nanticoke.
The only surviving spiritual practice from the Nanticoke is the Ii'dos or "Blind Man" spirit who was given to the Seneca and is now part of the False Face Society. Some researchers think that this was originally a sorcerer "guild" who practiced both good and bad conjuring. I only saw one possible original Blind Man maskette that is sometimes identified with a mii'singk mask but it has lines radiating from it's eyes which might indicate some sort of "occular powers".

Re: Machtapassican

I'd read that a small chidl like creature would come into a village and would come back no mater how many times he was killed.  Kind of freaky.

All I ever heard or read was that the "witch bundle" would "cry like a child".
Usually when it comes to witchcraft a owl is involved. Sometimes the sorcerer would change into a owl other times the owl was the psychopomp.

Kemper,
If you have anymore witchcraft questions use the form email. This really shouldn't be discussed on a public forum. It's not considered proper conversation.
My grandfather was a Meteu (sorcerer) and some of us have seen some freaky stuff. He died the way all conjurers do......painfully. I'm a Hicksite Quaker (see-Deist) myself but we do have traditionalists here.
