The difference may not be that great.  It could be as simple as a matter of personal interpretation.  Perhaps, some felt that the obligation to give names was limited to their own people (including adoptees), while others felt that that obligation was not limited to their own people.  Nicknames were given to non-Indians, fairly often.

I simply don't want to leave any doubt in anybody's mind, about what Mrs. Dean's position on this was.

that is a good point!

And I agree with clearing up Nora's name in this, that was my main purpose in bringing these fools out in this thread, everything in their "history" about Nora, and Sam for that matter, is a lie!

Re: "United Eastern Lenape Nation"

I got an email from a member of Sams family, who also contacted this group, and the mis-information has been removed from their "history" page, seems enough of us spoke up about this, I wait to see what the next "history" will be:rolleyes:
"corrected" page: http://ueln.com/ueln_history

I am still looking for their "Lenape Sundance Headress" Drawing, I will find it!

Re: "United Eastern Lenape Nation"

a violation of the Native American Arts and Crafts act on Ebay, again
http://cgi.ebay.com/Lenape-Native-Am-Ba … 2ea9b3ff07

"Item specifics
Artisan:     Blue Feather                                         Original or Reproduction:     Original
Tribal Affiliation:     Delaware: Lenape

This is a Lenape/ Delaware Indian bag, made in the 1960's by the original Lenape owner-user.   He was from the United Eastern Lenape Nation, of the Delaware Nation. It is nicely beaded with blue birds with white markings flying in a white beaded backgound. The beads are a bit loose here and there but only in a minor way.  It has its oringal buckskin fringe and strap, with beige cowhide bag.  The cowhide is stained from outdoor ceremonial wear in the elements.  Not including the fringe and strap the bag measures ten inches by almost ten inches.  The strap from bag to shoulder is 24 inches.  This is a  wonderful Native American artifact for the collector, anthropologist, or indeed Native American.

Thanks for looking and the best of everything to you."

I contacted the seller asking that they modify this listing, if I don't hear from them in a day I will report it to Ebay and the office in DC, again.  This is the 3rd item on Ebay that has been misrepresented as being "Native made" from the "UELN", with the 2 earlier in the year.

Re: "United Eastern Lenape Nation"

the seller contacted me and has changed the add to read:

"This is a  hand-made bag, made in the 1960's by the original owner.    It is nicely beaded with blue birds with white markings flying in a white beaded backgound. The beads are a bit loose here and there but only in a minor way.  It has its original buckskin fringe and strap, with beige cowhide bag.  The cowhide is stained from outdoor  wear in the elements.  Not including the fringe and strap the bag measures ten inches by almost ten inches.  The strap from bag to shoulder is 24 inches.  A great stylized piece.

Thanks for looking and the best of everything to you."

will leave the slick email response out, as it only shows simple folks can really be!  But I will say, despite all that you may read on the internet, things are not always as they seem, and while there are not laws preventing hobbiest from calling themselves "Indians" in general there are laws about mis representing arts and crafts as "Indian Made" when the maker is not!

Re: "United Eastern Lenape Nation"

This is good, but the URL still contains the phrasing, "...Lenape-Native-Am-Bag-Beaded-Hand-made-1960s-Delaware..."  Doesn't that indicate it is still being sold as an American Indian made item?

Thanks.  Don't know much about e-bay.  Wonder why the old link still works?  Maybe it takes a while to phase out the old URL.

I don't know a lot about it but from the few items I had removed from there the old link seems to work for a while, usually a day, then switches over to the new link, seems Ebay is getting lax with watching what is being sold there was red tailed hawk feathers being sold last week and took 3 days to get it off, finally Fish and Game contacted them to have them removed , I double checked and this is not listed under Native Made, any more, with Ebay.

Yes.  It probably does take a day or so for the old link to disappear.

Re: "United Eastern Lenape Nation"

WE HERE IN ASHTABULA COUNTY OF THE INDEPENDENT MATIS INDIANS, WHICH STARTED IN 2007, HAVE KEPT A LOW PROFILE UNTIL ALL OF OUR PEOPLE ARE SCHOOLED PROPERLY IN THE NATIVE WAYS.  WE ALL REALIZE THAT WHATEVER WE DO, SAY, OR TEACH WILL REFLECT ON ALL NATIVE AMERICANS IN NORTH AMERCIA, NOT JUST THE UNITED STATES.
RECENTLY THERE HAS BEEN MUCH BAD PUBLICITY BEING SENT ACROSS THE INTERNET ABOUT THE UNITED EASTERN LENAPE NATION, AND NAMES SUCH AS BLUEFEAQTHERS, MORNING DOVE, AND OTHERS ARE BEING MENTIONED.
IT APPEARS THEY HAVE SAT IN COMPLACENCY AT MEETINGS AND ALLOWED INTERUPTIONS TO GO ON.  RECENTLY A NATION'S CALN CHIEF AND ELDER WAS INTERUPTED WHEN HE HAD THE TALKING FEATHER...PERMISSION FROM MORNING DOVE, THE SO-CALLED NATION'S MOTHER.  HE BECAME UPSET, RESIGNED ON THE SPOT, AND THEN DECLARED WAR ON THIS NATION.
HE IS ALSO A DISABLED MARINE VETERAN, AND ALLEGES THAT ONE OF THE MEMBERS STOLD SOME ITEMS HE WAS SAVING FOR HIS  TWO YEAR OLD SON.  HE FURTHER ALLEGES A MEMBER OF THIS NATION DID SHODDY REPAIR WORK ON HIS VAN, AND NOW HE CANNOT MAKE THE DRIVE TO AKRON TO VISIT HIS SON...WHOM HE HAS NOT SEENS SINCE JANUARY.
HE MAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CURRENT WAVE OF BAD PUBLICITY AFFECTING ALL NATIVE AMERICAN GROUPS IN THE COOUNTY OF ASHTABULA. I DO KNOW WE HAVE VISITED THE UELN'S GATHERINGS BEFORE.  THE CLAN MOTHER, I BELIEVE IT WAS MORNING DOVE, SAID THE CALL THEM "EVENTS" OR "GATHERINGS" SO THEY WILL NOT HAVE TO FOLLOW TRADITIONS OR WORRY ABOUT A.I.M. WE WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH THEM.  WHEN HAVE YOU SEEN GRAND ENTRY ALLOW PEOPLE WITH BLUE JEANS, BIKER VESTS, MOTORCYCLE BOOTS AND TENNIS SHOES.  TOO MANY PROBLEMS TO POST HERE. EMAIL dmegan38@yahoo.com SHE WILL FILL YOU IN ON ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW. I WROTE THE LOCAL PAPERS INFORMING THEM OURS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE U.E.L.N., AND THE ASHTABULA STAR BEACON ON NOOV 1ST OF 2007 PUBLISHED A LETTER FROM A DISGRUNTLED RESIDENT ACROSS FROM THE PARK IN KINGSVILLE, OH WHO EXPRESSED PROTEST THAT U.E.L.N. EVER BE ALLOWED THERE AGAIN.  SAID THEY DRUMMED LATE AT NIGHT AND WOKE PEOLE UP. THE U.E.L.N. KIDS WERE HEARD RUNNING AROUND BETWEEN 3 AND 4 AM GETTING INTO VENDOR TENTS AND CREATING NOISE WHICH WOKE PEOPLE UP.  THEN WHEN CLOSING DOWN LATE SUNDAY NIGHT THEY HAD RADIOS BLARING AND MORNING DOVE SAID "WHO GIVES A **** WHEN TOLD A NEIGHBOR LADY CAME TO COMPLAIN.  NOW THEY HAVE PEOPLE UPSET ABOUT THEIR UPCOMING EVENT AT LAKEVILLAGE CAMP GROUND IN ANDOVER, OHIO, AND PEOPLE HAVE EMAILED blubawy@lakevillagecampground.com, or net, AND THEY QLL AHVE PROTESTED.
SOME EMAILS INDICATE BLUEFEATHERS MOLESTED HIS FORMER STEPSON, A ROBERT WILSON OF SHARON, PA, WHO HAPPENSS TO BE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED SINCE BIRTH. ALSO HIS HOME, AND THAT OF MORNING DOVE ARE RUMORED TO HAVE BEEN INSPECTED FREQUENTLY FOR COMPLAINTS OF TRASHY YARDS OR OTHER HEALTH HAZARDS...CERTAINLY NOT A GOOD EXAMPLE OF BEING CARETAKERS.
I HEARD ALSO THEY WERE KICKED OUT OF A BLAKESLEE LOG CABIN DAYS IN ASHTABULA.  BLUEFEATHERS IS NOT WELCOME AT TIENESTA BECAUSE HE AND OTHERS ALLOWED SKINNY DIPPING TO GO ON.  AS I SAID, DO SOME EMAILING AND   THEOSE WHO ARE SUBMITTING THESE WILL TELL YOU WHAT IS UP,AND THEY NAME NAMES, PLACES, AND GIVE REFERENCES.

Re: "United Eastern Lenape Nation"

what exactly, or who maybe, are the "INDEPENDENT MATIS INDIANS"?  I know a little about the Matis, the Indigenous People of the Amazon, but did not realize there was an organized group of them in Ohio?  Are you a "cultural organization"?,  "Socitey"?, or "Tribe"??hmm

I am assuming she meant Metis, but would assume they are about as "Metis" as they are "Matis" so it really doesn't matter much....

Re: "United Eastern Lenape Nation"

We might be able to draw a clue about these people from what else is going on in Ashtabula County and who is trying to insert himself into the midst of it all. Isn't that where the proposed casino would go? Doesn't that post look like vintage LS; caps, misspellings and all? Now he wants to distance himself from the UELN. Or it could be a completely different group altogether, hoping for a piece of the casino.

Re: "United Eastern Lenape Nation"

I dont know if this is where I post about the United Eatern Lenape or not.  They dont have enough dancers at their gatherings and after they do the entry they give a short talk and then there is nothing to do the rest of the day.  Just walk wround to vending places. I am seeing all sorts of bad things about them on several sites of internet too. Growing up in ashtabula from facebook is one site and there are all kinds of emails popping up on them from all across the country, then they made twitter many times.  I tell people if you want to go to a real pow wow to go to the reservations where federal recognized tribes live and make sure you know what you are reading in books because I spent time reading a book once and then found out the writer was Scottish and had no Indian blood.

Re: "United Eastern Lenape Nation"

Maybe the UELN is finally running out of momentum. Then again, they just could be in a rebuilding year, like the Pittsburgh Pirates (who have been rebuilding since 1979)!
