Re: Lenape Nation of Pa Current Events!

He! Gang, (and you too,NP)

I may be getting old - no cracks please! but I remember that the  "DISPLAY" was up on Sept. 17 (or another close date) of 2009. So what's this in
the paper about this awful mistake still going to fool the public  until July of 2010?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Did you guys think that I died or something?   I have been working very hard with David Oestreicher on using many of the pieces of my Lenape Collection for a major display at Ellis Island (NYC) for the celebration of Henry Hudson's trip to Manhatten Island in 1603 (Date?)

This is NOT a time that Eastern Native tribes would be happy

about today! At least the Lenape  precontact/contact stuff is correct!    More details later.  The display is supposed to open next Tues. (Sept. 15) subject to change.   Major opening in Oct.

Re: Lenape Nation of Pa Current Events!

HE! Gang,

This book,: The Common Sense Life, by Donald Repsher is interesting, if only for the list of people who "assisted?" him.

A long time ago, at a much earlier "Lenape/Delaware" websight
(Rayb W. would remember, ) "Uncle" Donald Repsher sent in a few comments. I don't remember much of that site. It was some time ago. I've never met the man, nor do I know of his work.

But if the old saying: "You're known by the company you keep!"  is true . . . . . . that is not the book for me!

                                                        My Opinion,

Re: Lenape Nation of Pa Current Events!

Presently the LNP is selling the research and writings of Uncle Don Repsher, as well as a collection of primary source material by Wipunkteme, both at a pretty hefty price. Is Uncle Don's research any good? Or is it as creative and imaginative as the "research" of other LNP members?

Re: Lenape Nation of Pa Current Events!

I'll let you know, after I read this one.  I believe the Phil Rice CD's include at least one of my essays (the one on the Burial of Chief Paul), which I put on a couple of the forums, at one time.

The battle cry of every *An ironic acronym used in another forum* and wannabe out there. Seven of my great-grandparents are European, but I'm only going to honor my one Cherokee grandparent. How disrespectful is that? You're the sum-total of all your ancestors; you can't pick and choose.

Re: Lenape Nation of Pa Current Events!

"...The story follows the main character, a snake (xhuk, pronounced "huk" with a long u, in Lenape) as he tries to find out what color he is..."

this is in the DePaul dialect ONLY, in Lenape(southern Unami): xkuk (x ook) where the "x" is pronounced as the German "ch", harsh and from the back of the throat, in Northern Unami it is "achgok" where the "ch" is is pronounced as the German "ch".

This will be an interesting book  roll

This actually twists my butt. I am proud of my English and Scottish heritage and just as immersed in it as I am my Nanticoke and Rappahannock Heritage and I'm a "Half Breed". neutral

Re: Lenape Nation of Pa Current Events!

Here is a blog written by one of my people, who never got in touch with their own people, and is now hobknobbing with Shelley De paul and taking her psuedo-language class. I guess Shelly found her own Nanticoke-Lenape to brainwash. She even calls the Southern Unami "Unalatchtigo". hmm

Re: Lenape Nation of Pa Current Events!

I was going to put this in the Lenape Language section, but maybe this is a more appropriate place.  I see that the LNP has a display at U of PA which calls "snowshoes," kunhoksena.  This is a word they made up from kun ("snow") and -hoksena ("shoes").  Not a bad guess, really, but there isn't any such word in Lenape.  neutral  The word for snowshoes is agamak in Northern Unami (similar in old SU).  This will be our little secret.   wink

Will wonders never cease?   neutral

NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION GRANT ANNOUNCED IN:

THE SOCIETY FOR THE STUDY OF THE INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES OF AMERICA
October - December 2009 NEWSLETTER XXVII:1- 4, page 18:

Pennsylvania Lenape Documentation

This award supports critical work related to the Lenape Tribe
of Pennsylvania. Their language, which is related to Delaware
(SIL code: DEL), has been considered extinct in Pennsylvania.
Recently, however, elements of the language retained by the
descendants of the last speakers have become known to
researchers. This project includes interviews with community
elders who retain this language knowledge, specifically related
to: ceremonies, kinship terms, flora and fauna, and thus
contributes to our understanding of language loss within this
community. The intellectual merit of the project is seen in the
development of annotated texts and new dictionary materials,
including previously unavailable tables of verb paradigms
which will be of particular interest to scholars of Algonquian
languages.

The broader impacts are impressive in that the project pairs
Swarthmore college students, who are learning the language in
the school setting, with community members who have a
retained knowledge of parts of the language, in workshops
where the students' linguistic skills assist in the development
of community language materials. As such, the project offers a
model for broadening participation which could be replicated
in similar university-community partnerships.

Ya know..............mad
I have sent the folks out at Swarthmore pages and pages of Shelly's garbage, with corrections, showing them how screwed up her interpretations are and nothing, one of the misfits even said that it "...doesn't matter really...", for crying out loud she mixed 2 different languages together, NOT dialects but LANGUAGES!madmadmad
