An Easter Text

This pioneering manuscript translation into Delaware (Northern Unami) was done by Otta's ancestor, Johannes Roth, in 1772.  The Biblical text is from the English translation of Samuel Lieberkuhn's History of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, to which I've supplied the word-for-word analysis.


§. 127.

(Matthew 27:57-61; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:38-42.)



1. And after this, when the even was come, behold, there came a rich man of Arimathea, a city of the Jews, named Joseph, an honourable counsellor, and he was a good and a just man.

2. The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them: but also himself waited for the kingdom of God, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews.

3. This man went in boldly unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus, that he might take it away.

4. And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.

5. And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave him leave, and commanded the body to be delivered to Joseph.

6. And he bought fine linen, and took him down.

7. And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

8. Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

9. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new sepulchre which he (Joseph) had hewn out in the rock, wherein was never man yet laid.

10. There laid they Jesus therefore, because of the Jews preparation-day, and the sabbath drew on; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand; and (they) rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

11. And the women also which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre: and there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary the mother of Joses, sitting over against the sepulchre, beholding how his body was laid.

12. And they returned, and prepared spices, and ointments; and rested the sabbath-day, according to the commandment.

§. 128.

(Matthew 27:62-66.)



1. Now the next day that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.

[That other day, that he-follows-it when-it-passes-by there-is-readiness when-it-is-the-day, there they-come |all-of-them-visit-him or they-came-to-him| those chief-priests and Pharisees utterly all to to-Pilate and they-say-to-him:  Lord or {O-Governor}: we we-remember-it, that-he this-one {he-who-leads-people-astray} what-he-said, as that in-the-past still when-he-is-alive:  I-will when-they-pass-by when-there-are-three-nights I-(will)-rise-up.]



2. Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.

[Therefore {say-it}, that-he-will the-person he-(will)-be-watched he-(will)-be-watched the-tomb |the-tomb-place| three-nights so-long, so-that-will that-will they-thus they they-who-believe-(in)-him not they-do-not-come and they-do-not-steal this-one, and they-do-not-say to the-multitude: already he he-rises-up from those those-who-are-dead, and little-by-little will-with-(it) also {the-last} {error} more it-is-bad than as-it-was at-first.]



3. Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch, go your way, make it as sure as you can.

4. So they went and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone and setting a watch.

§. 129.



(Matthew 28:1-8; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-9,12; John 20:1-10.)



1. When the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.

2. And very early in the morning, the first day of the week, when it was yet dark, as it began to dawn, they came to the sepulchre, and certain others with them, to see it, bringing the spices which they had prepared.

3. And behold, there was a great earthquake; for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it: his countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow; and for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men, (and fled).

[And behold, there it-was-so a-great earth quaking.  Because his-angel our-Lord he-comes from from-Heaven unto-here he-comes-down, (the-Earth) he-stands-there and he-rolls-it-back that stone from the-door (of) the-tomb |of-the-tomb| and {he-moves-on-top-of-it}, and his his-attire it-is-white, as-if |like| snow.  Those guards {they-are-shaken} by-fear by and {they-are-stunned}, like they-are-dead, (and \by-and-by/ all-of-them-run-away.]



4. And they (the women) said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? for it was very great.

5. And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away.

[And they when-they-look-at-it, also indeed they-see-it, that-it that stone (already) away {it-has-been-placed}.]
