Incorrect census. Indian as white, incorrect age.

I haven't looked at enough census to say I know how often this happens, but I saw it for the first time. I was looking at a family on a 1900 census, and lo and behold, one of the persons was listed as "white", and 7 years older than his age. He was between 2 houses of family members, all the other Indians listed as Indian. I think the birthplace given might be wrong also! My guess is, since he robbed banks and trains, and went to prison at least once, maybe twice, so maybe that's why he wasn't truthful with the census taker??  I think I was really surprised to see it tho! I've wondered if my G. Grandfather changed name, age, and now I saw how easily it was done! Surprised me.

I have seen this a few times, not sure "why" but it happens, even recently was convinced that someone was born and lived in a certain area and then saw other legal papers putting him somewhere else, so it does happen!

Thanks, lenape. I appreciate your input.  I'd heard that it happened, but had not seen it until now.

Since census takers were/ are not asking for any ID it's all only a guess.
White is not or ever will be a race or ethnicity.

As Allegheny for her maiden name.

I checked my notes and the name is misspelled, from notes taken from my genealogical research from a popular ancestry website.
I wrote it the way I saw it, so until I see the source, I will have to file the information for now.
My memory of the spelling was incorrect. That's all I can say for now.

Okay.  I've got to ask:  What is the basis for your statements regarding the white race?  You write:

"White is not or ever will be a race ...."

"The White Race is a Legal Fiction"

No more than black or brown is not a race either.
Skin pigmentation is not a race anymore than the color of hair, eyes or even the length of your fingernails.
The point I make by saying that is, it's so obvious it's overlooked.
And I feel it's important enough to state.

Continuing,
When white is used on legal forms it is legally a fiction, and that usage has caused a mis-perception in the world of what it means to be Indian or any race for that matter.
Especially when it comes to Health, how can a white american be treated as Italian "white" when technically he is from the Moqui reservation and "white"
Genetically they are two different Birds so to speak.
Their biology is worlds apart, and scientifically they can't be treated by a doctor the same.
Can of worms officially open,
In all respect

I was wondering the same thing?

Illegal aliens have always been a problem in the United States. Ask any Native American.

Re: Incorrect census. Indian as white, incorrect age.

Well...  I wouldn't worry about opening a can of worms.  Everyone has a right to his or her opinion.  However, the fact that someone's race is misidentified doesn't make a race a "non-race."  That is just a clerical error (intentional or not) on a piece of paper.  They can screw things up for people, but they have no bearing on genetically-based racial classifications--euphemistically called "biogeographical groupings" by those afraid of the word, "race."

Your quote from Samuel Johnson relates to the middle class wanting to appear "Rich"

I think it works well for any pretense, false representation or attempted identity theft.  I know it really pisses off white people trying to pass themselves off as American Indians.  I like that.

Re: Incorrect census. Indian as white, incorrect age.

I have three family members thus far that were born ten years before their birthday.
I guess coming from a different culture, it was normal to lie about your age since you were reborn "christened".

Chevy, I do not want to come off as rude. Until I'm certain that I am known and trusted here and the same is true for me. I respectfully deny answering such a personal question.
I've thought about a way to ambiguously answer it for you, there isn't anything I would feel comfortable with.

Re: Incorrect census. Indian as white, incorrect age.

Ok, back to the original subject. Indian as white.
So while doing general research I've found known indians (legal birth certificates) who list some some family as white, while listing themselves as indian. Back to that albinism again.
I joined fb and took a tour of the nations pictures, it's cute how reservation people just let it all hang out.
I found people that we're active tribal members who looked like family litterally.

Hi, I'm sorry. Some of the things I state are out there, and I'm uncertain of the minefield of people's beliefs and do not want to hurt anyone.

All true, I'm sure.  But, what's the point?
