Helen started a spam thread. It's probably in storage.

I don't remember seeing that. I can't remember Helen posting on AITF in a long time. But then, after the craziness last summer with the Deletion Queen, if it was in Venters Corner, we know it's history.

Anischi!  I'll try to "analyze" this when time permits.  For now, I'd simply note that he signed off with an "Oneh."  If he was Cayuga, why didn't he say, "Nya-weh."  (Correct me if I'm wrong, Mark, or anyone!)  "Oneh" is Tuscarora for 'goodbye.'

for the sake of language:
Cayuga Expressions (a short print out?)

Good-bye - "oneh" (see also - oneh g'ihya)

English-Cayuga/Cayuga-English Dictionary, by Frances Froman, Alfred Keye, Carrie Joan Dyck, Lottie Keye pg. 139

good bye see: I (o:neh g'ih-ya:') wave (*note the "dash" /-/ between /h/ and /y/ is a "dot" in the text.)

edit to add:
English-Cayuga/Cayuga-English Dictionary, by Frances Froman, Alfred Keye, Carrie Joan Dyck, Lottie Keye pg. 139

I now see - o:neh, godagye' (*note pronunciation "mark" under /e/ and /o/ respectively)

Re: Sam Grey Wolf Hanna

This MIGHT be Sam.  This guy enlisted three months after the end of WW2.  I can't find any other Samuel Hannah from Butler County, Ohio, than the one we're discussing.  The birth day is off a little, but this might be a transcription error (I only have the typed version).  The birthplace says "Ohio," instead of "Kentucky," but this, too, may just be a mistake, since he was living in Ohio.  This needs to be checked, obviously.  Also:  Does this qualify as WW2 service?  Could be.  If it is him, than he certainly spent his entire first twenty-some years in the KY/OH area.

I also wonder if that "G" stood for "Greywolf," ???  Still listed as "white," though.

Re: Sam Grey Wolf Hanna

from the article in "Spirit of Geronimo Returns":

"Sam Gray Wolf; a young Indian of Cayuga-Delaware descent, was born into the Wolf Clan of his Tribe near Miami, Oklahoma.  This Clan is an old Iroquois Clan which still exists today in New York State, the original home of the Cayugas.  During World War 2 Sam served in the Infantry and the Paratroopers for four years, and was decorated three times.  Below Sam will tell you something of the history of his people, and about his trading post and future plans.

This is followed by a brief history of the Cayuga of NE Oklahoma, a brief statement about the trading post "The Longhouse" and a picture of Sam and Chief Running Elk of the Onieda.

thoughts:  *IF* he was "BORN INTO" this clan of the "Iroquois", that would mean that his mother(or her side of the family) was this, or?  I know some of the Tribes out there have become "lax" on this "tradition", not sure about the Seneca/Cayuga out there...  *IF* he was decorated, would this be documented somewhere? (those who spoke at his mourning claimed this was true, one claimed to have served with him!?(for what that is worth))

edit: I meant Seneca/Cayuga, NOT Onieda!!!

Re: Sam Grey Wolf Hanna

This has to be fabricated!  He was definitely born in Jefferson County, Kentucky; and brought up in Ohio.  His mother was born in Kentucky, as a "white," daughter of David Bybee and Ella Harris (also "white").  If there were two Sam Hannahs born on the same exact day, with mother's whose surname is Bybee, then this would be one of the most remarkable coincidences I've ever come across!

The Cayuga are definitely matrilineal, so this just doesn't make any sense, to me.  LOL!

Wait a minute!  LOL!  His social security number was issued in Ohio, too.  No way he was born and raised in Miami, Oklahoma.  neutral

His DD-214 doesn't exist at Levenworth. I told you that already. There was a fire there in the 80s and some documents were lost but that was only discharge papers. He's also not listed as having any brass pinned on either.  neutral

Are you sure?  The Air Force was still part of the Army, at that time.  Of course, maybe the records were transferred.  His death record lists his military service as the Army.

AAF records were kept at Hunter AAF Base when it was Army Air Force. They were moved when the Air Force became a seperate entity.

Just noticed that the author of The Spirit of Geronimo Returns, Zula Brinkerhoff, was listed as an "Associate" of the United Lenape Band and Adopted Tribal Peoples, along with Iron Eyes Cody, on Sam Hannah's stationery.

Yes she was given an "associate" membership while Sam was living in New York, and she was documenting his group, as well as other groups that are mentioned in her book.  As for "Iron Eyes", he coned quite a few folks in that time, he was listed as a member of at least 2 other legit. "groups" back then, neither of which I care to mention as their validity is not up for debate, LOL!!!
