Documentary Evidence on the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape

For now, at least, I'm using only public records that pertain to New Jersey's Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape forbears.  The list could be greatly expanded by using State of Delaware records; but, since most of those belong, mainly (though not entirely), to the Delaware state tribes, they might be better posted on the new Nanticoke and Southeast Tribes board.  I will add records to this post, as found.  I use only documents which show individuals listed specifically as "Indian," since those constitute evidence of that background, which is the purpose of these posts.  (This certainly doesn't mean that people not listed as "Indian" weren't, in fact, Indians.  It simply means that those records provide no direct evidence of Indian ancestry.)  Magnified portions of census records appear below each census page, for readability.

Rich:  I seem to recall that Indian Ann has descendants who are also members of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape.  Can you confirm this?  If so, I can put up some documents for her and her family, in this thread.

The Robert's family, and the Millers are supposed to be the same Millers from Brotherton too.

Re: Documentary Evidence on the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape

Good.  Ann Ashatoma's husband was John Roberts, and they had four boys and three girls.  I remember "talking" to the wife of one of the boy's descendants, at the old AITF site; and she said her husband was already a Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape, though through a different ancestor.  So, at least some of the NLL must be descended from Ann.  In 1958, when the ASNJ placed the historical plaque at Brotherton, 91 of Ann's descendants attended the ceremony.  So, there are lots of them around!

New records, today:

Ann (Ashatoma) Roberts, "Indian Ann," listed as 87 year-old (she was actually 77) "Indian" and "Basket Maker," in 1880.

Anna Maria (Roberts) Marshall, daughter of "Indian Ann," also in 1880.

I have a picture of John and Dorothy by the garden, then another one of John posing with a huge deer. One picture is on display at NMAI ( Grandpop John and his deer and buddies). Tree Hugger will put them up when we are done setting up and taking care of other matters.

Re: Documentary Evidence on the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape

I found this in Frank Stewart's 'Indians of Southern New Jersey'

Missionary John Holbrook in a leter of 1725 to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel wrote "As for the Indians there are very few seen here. They are a wild roving people and never remain long in one place." According to his letter Salem then had thirty houses, Greenwich about twenty and Fairfield a like number.

These are the core areas of the Nanticoke-Lenni Lenape and if you think of "houses" as "families" that is a pretty fair number of Lenape around in South Jersey for 1725.

Also there is Zeiglers, Cooks and Comers who are married in to the tribe who might have still claimed "Indian" in the 20th Century.

Some more documented Indian surnames that are found in the ancestry of tribal members if you can find anything Ray.

Hickman
Abrams
Comer

I know there are still Abrams who are in Indian Mills. They are actually the largest landowners and lease even more for crops. Some claim Indian, some don't. None of them want to be bothered by the fact though.
